Ode to Oderberger Strasse

We are loving the pocket of Berlin that we have found ourselves in.  We are close to Oderberger Strasse, which has become one of our favourite hang-outs.  We are loving its' cafes, playgrounds and overall vibe.  At the end closest to our apartment is the Fast Rabbit, a vegan cafe that makes excellent lentil soups, salads and wraps.  They also have a dangerously good range of brownies, biscuits and bliss balls.  John was deeply, deeply sceptical.  He said he'd been burnt by bland vegan food before, but he's come around and we have become regulars.
Our morning routine involves picking up a coffee and walking down Oderberger Strasse to this playground. It has a huge deer, a miniature wooden house, ping pong tables and street art.  Berlin has over 2000 playgrounds, all of which have been designed with a specific imaginative theme.  No cookie cutter playgrounds and tanbark here.  Berlin kids have got it good.
Oderberger Strasse is today full of relaxed Berliners enjoying their morning coffees.  It wasn't always that way.  As you walk along the street you can see the remnants of sniper fire from when the Russians fought the Germans here in WWII. The bullet holes are a reminder that this very cool city has seen some very dark times.
John watched the World Cup final last night in a bar on Oderberger Strasse.  The streets were full of people, despite the heavy rain.  I wasn't watching the game, but I could hear the cheers of nearby crowds every time Germany came close to scoring a goal.  And when they finally did win a goal, which won them the game, there was whistling, honking of horns and whooping all around our apartment.  Although it was close to midnight, I'm quite sure everyone was up celebrating.  Finn and Wilf slept soundly through it all.  It seems fitting that Germany won.  It feels like it can't do much wrong.  The economy is humming along, it's heads and shoulders above every other European country and judging by the people around us life's going swimmingly.  Love this city.
